Pitches

Every day at the 3D animation studio I’m interning at, we work on pitches. Since we are a good studio, we get the biggest of the big here in Toronto. That means Powerade, Tide, etc. You almost do the entire spot in a pitch in order to convince the client that you know what you are doing and that they can be confident in you as animators. This is very stressful because there are usually 5 other animation houses that are pitching the same job as you from down the street (litterally). Creating 75% of the commercial takes a lot of work, and if you win the pitch, great, you get paid for that work, and the work it takes to finish it up to put on TV. However if you dont win, you worked for FREE. This is why it is important to win the pitch no matter what!

Our studio puts together a lot of stuff besides style frames for the client. (style frames are snap shots of your finished animation) We put together animation tests as well (but everyone does this), but everything is in HOW you present. Advertising skills and public speaking skills are vital here. You think that if you are just good and creative that is enough, its NOT. You will not win the pitch if you cannot communicate or relate with the client. Some clients have been working with the same animation houses for years because they have a relationship, they let other houses pitch for fun and to be nice more than anything, even though they are going to go with their trusted house anyways. How are you going to break that connection? By communicating your idea better than them, and knocking their socks off with visuals. Man am I glad I took Advertising as well.

OK lets get started…

Heres a recap of what I have been up to interning at this 3D animation studio here in Toronto.

One of the first things they had me do was design a client log in page for them. This is a section separate of their website that clients visit in order to insert information about the ad agency they are from, information about the pitch itself, and timeframes etc.

I designed the layout in photoshop, did some painting, and put it into after effects, where I animated a mouse cursor flying around the screen in order for my boss to get an idea of how things would rollover, flip up, click, etc.

Second thing was working on a commercial for Toyota Prius.

This was much more exciting. The commercial was simple. All they needed was text to animate where they wanted. They sent me the original footage edited together in a tiff sequence, and then I created 4 or 5 ways that the text could animate on – only on one of the 6 frames though. No sense in doing too much work for all the sections when they might go in a diff direction.

they wanted something elegant. they chose of course the worst one. and so we proceed to create the rest of the 6 sections that have text. The logo animation at the end was already done, so we didnt even have to do that.

Layer Tennis

I stumbled onto this site somehow. It is the digital artists’ version of freestyling similar to the battles from 8 mile, or Freestlye Fridays on BET.

Its fairly simple. There are motion graphic artists that one begins with an animation of his choice, the last frame of the first animation because the first frame of the competitor. You end up exploiting the opponent’s weaknesses and flipping his animations back onto him. Very similar to what a rapper would do in a freestyle battle. There is also 2D, which I find less exciting, but the Lead off guy creates a graphic design piece with type and image. The opponent ‘returns’ with a piece of his own, spinning off of either the image or the type.

Most of these battles are quite clever. It is all sponsored by Adobe. the winner is decided by the most Twitter votes.

one of my fav battles:

Summer Internship Diary

I am also going to be using this blog as a source of information for viewers interested in how my internship is going and what I actually do while I am here.

As some of you may know, I am interning at BTRY here in Toronto, which is run under the Electric Company. They are primarily a 3D animation house who do really stunning stuff for commercials you are all aware of.

Anyways, check back here often and i will be updating this as much as possible.
